I am Bridgette Serrao-Waithe. I would like to say humbly that this account of Grand Master Suarez’s moments with General Choi are very touching and enlightening. Firstly, I laughed to myself when I read that he volunteered to perform Chon-Ji because Chon-Ji is also the pattern I volunteered to do at the very first seminar I attended on my own which was a women’s seminar. I did not have to hold any positions in my pattern for very long fortunately for me, however I now understand why maybe GM Suarez is a stickler for positions being held himself now and the importance of it. 🙂

Also, I noted that GM Suarez seemed to be present for some very pivotal moments in the life of General Choi and I feel that it was for a reason or at the least a very lucky coincidence to be a warm strong presence even in those tiny maybe even silent moments of interaction with General Choi in his sadness and during his near final days.

I think that GM Suarez has described moments in his own life here that we can all identify with. Moments when we ourselves are brave, when we are silly, when we feel that we could do better and when we feel the immense pleasure of overcoming.

Again, from the little I know of GM Suarez I can easily say that he embodies the principles that General Choi displayed in this memoire in terms of his perseverance and dedication in spite of any illness or circumstance, his devotion to teaching with all his heart, his attention to discipline and professionalism, his love for his family and his eagerness and ability to express to his students that
– he sees them,
– he appreciates them
– and he has pride in them
as General Choi did to him. I think a little encouragement can change a life and make a difference in the world. It also shows that we learn by example.

Thank you, Sir, for sharing your memories with us so that we could get to know the late General Choi some more. We appreciate you taking the time and heart.
